Context

1789 is a artist launch pad and accelerator for young artistes out of Africa, It is the business end of TSA(The Sarz Academy). Both entities are owned by multiple award winning producer SARZ, who has produced songs for alot of global artists including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, Chris Brown & Drake.
He iterated that at the core of everything at 1789 was technology and huge amount of data, so the task ahead was to create a visual system that was not only capable of merging music and technology while embodying the African spirit but the system should also enable the record label create sub identities for artists they would eventually sign.

Strategy

So what did we do? First, We simplified the brand concept to make sense of what we needed to portray, we all agreed that the identity system should exude a sense of structure, simplicity and be dynamic enough for multiple use cases. The underlying visual language was captured under one sentence "Let's create the structure for others".

Building the "Structure".

We began with creating a wordmark that relied on the underlying system of concrete edges. The construction was done with this idea and we started to pick out components for other use cases. So, We created the particle for visual effects, the cursor for typing names, the stamp for holding text, the frame for housing photos and an audio spectrum to be responsive to music.

Building on "The One".
After breaking down the system into the most basic form, "The one", We built on it to create a fluid and dynamic system that responded to music and could be used as visualisers in backgrounds & music demo.

Extended Patterns.

The extended form of "the one" was further explored to create piano like tiles that stay true to the music heritage we wanted the visual system to embody, the extended form takes centre stage in print and other forms of media that do not require motion, the aim was to make sure every touch point of the visual system can be a proper extension of the brand.

"The One" as cursor, stamps and audio spectrum.
Working together with the marketing department, I also realised that the applications in social media play a huge role in the acceptance of the brand system, we needed ways to introduce artists, highlight them and of course a part that caters to only the sound aspect of things by creating a reactive template for the audio spectrum.

Typing Cursor

The type system was subsequently paired with the visual system with the use of cursors, the use of the one as a cursor within a stamp & artist label.

Everyone can have a unique identity.
An integral part of the people experiencing the brand are the artists and as such, we took an approach to include them into the system.
We took a simple and unique approach towards this by creating a primary set of colors for the label but the secondary system is an infinite number of colors that are compatible with the color black. So every artist get's to choose a color they deeply resonate with and we can build on that to serve as a foundation for their subsequent projects.
